HSBC’s new policy of working six days a week in an attempt to enhance customer satisfaction has met with resistance by the managers. The bank managers have been assured that the extra working day can be compensated by taking another day off during the week resulting in no change in the number of working hours.

However, HSBC’s move to halve the sick pay benefit to a maximum of 26 weeks has clearly irritated the staff. This reduction in sick leave policy has brought the extended working week also under severe criticism.

The union Unite has openly called the policy unjust and unfair to its hardworking managers. It seeks to represent the managers by asking HSBC to voluntarily call for a union representation at the managerial level. Currently the union only represents the clerical staff.

According to Cath Speight, Unite national officer, it is time for a strong union representation to fight for the entitlement of rights and compensation. The unilateral move by the bank is indicative of its attitude towards its hard working staff. Bank managers work at salaries as low as £19,000 per year and if the benefits are also reduced, then the staff is clearly at the risk of being exploited.

Though a spokesperson for HSBC expressed that the policy was being received positively by its staff, Unite does not accept that comment at face value. In an attempt to enhance global presence and come across as the top among the service friendly banks, HSBC has failed to recognise its internal strength of human resource. By taking for granted employee loyalty at any cost HSBC now is facing indignation and unrest among its workers.

As reports of a forthcoming cut in public spending are doing the rounds, a health and safety consultant has warned of ‘big changes’ in the way health and safety guidelines are enforced across Britain.

Rob Castledine, of Workplace Law commented on Conservatives’ suggestion that low risk companies could get an independent audit done instead of government monitored health and safety inspections. This was one of their election messages that concentrated on bureaucratic red tape. He said that such a solution would be effective only if these companies hired external safety consultants to carry out impartial audits.

Castledine said no government can choose to ignore health and safety issues and all organisations must always be aware of their duties towards employees.

Castledine quoted data to stress that health required as much concern as safety. He said that more than 130,000 workers were injured in Britain every year with about 1.2 million workers being affected by work-related ill health in 2009.

As a result of these alarming numbers, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is giving primary importance to issues such as work-related ill health and how working conditions played a vital role in determining well being of employees. However, he did admit that these are often more difficult to assess and the implementation of corrective measures by organisations is also challenging.
